Shell Homage is a global award-winning sustainable brand that provides biodegradable composite materials and products made from discarded eggshells and various nutshells. It was founded by the multidisciplinary Egyptian designer Rania Elkalla based on her bachelor’s and master’s research projects.
The created biodegradable material serves as a replacement for oil-based plastics and can be applied in several functional applications such as interior design, lighting design, furniture design, home accessories, consumable goods, 3D printing, fashion, and jewelry design. Shell Homage bio composite material resembles marble, natural stones, rubber, or glass, but are made from food waste (Egg) + (Nut) shells. The material properties can be controlled and modified to suit different applications. The surface of the material can vary from rough to smooth, opaque, translucent, transparent, stiff to malleable.
We perceive “waste” as one material being transformed into another. We see value in everything, and we want to help others see that too.

The aim is to create functional and sustainable products that have a lifespan, being completely biodegradable. We fabricate biomaterials based on natural fillers such as eggshells and various nutshells, without the use of toxic chemicals. Our goal is to offer viable products that can decay when discarded in your compost, providing an environmentally friendly solution for disposal.

This approach offers the ultimate solution for eliminating the need to store items for years and getting rid of plastics that never decompose. The objects and materials we develop aspire to educate and enlighten people about their production process, the ingredients used, and the reasons behind their creation, ultimately inspiring one another. The idea is to work with bio plant based binding materials and natural fillers (food waste), experiment with unexpected influences of these materials and production techniques; infuse high-tech and handmade techniques in the production process. Each piece is handcrafted into unique combination of colors and patterns. It is 100% compostable when it is no longer in use.
